Special thanks to Hillary Miller ’02 for designing an especially cool DGALA Night Out! We will soon travel not to Canterbury, but to the much more conveniently-located Prospect Heights to witness Alexis McGuinness ’03 perform in T.S. Eliot’s Murder In The Cathedral.

After the performance, in true Dartmouth style, we’ll enjoy an exclusive happy hour open only to our group at Beast: Tapas + Lounge.  Although Thursday is ladies night at this venue, Beast welcomes all of us! And even if you didn’t go on an FSP or LSA to a Spanish-speaking country, your Spanish will be better after a few drinks at this Yelp-rated 4-star neighborhood gem. If you can’t join us at the show, you are still encouraged to join us at Beast. Alexis McGuinness has agreed to sign cocktail napkins upon request.

Homecoming in the South with Peter Saccio (Staunton, VA)

Blackfriars Playhouse and Stonewall Jackson Hotel
Historic Staunton, VA
October 29-31

Can’t make it to Hanover for Homecoming this fall? Consider celebrating Homecoming in the South with an extraordinary weekend of Shakespeare, scholarship, and Dartmouth camaraderie.

In this multipart event, we’ll see first-rate productions and participate in discussions with Peter Saccio, beloved Dartmouth professor and preeminent Shakespearean scholar, to gain further insight into the work that creates the magic of a Shakespearean play. Professor Saccio will lead us through a literary and theatrical labyrinth of Shakespeare’s plots, language, and themes, discussing their Elizabethan context and the significance subsequent generations have found in them.

The Taming of the Shrew – Friday, October 29
Othello – Saturday, October 30
Henry IV, part 2 – Sunday, October 31

Peter Saccio is the Leon D. Black Professor of Shakespearean Studies Emeritus at Dartmouth. He taught at Dartmouth for forty years and is now actively in alumni education. He’s published numerous books and articles on drama, as well as theatrical reviews, and many of his lectures are available in audio and video through The Teaching Company. Recognized repeatedly over the years for his commitment to teaching, Professor Saccio is the recipient of the Huntington Teaching Award for Outstanding Teaching and the Alumni Continuing Education award for service and dedication to lifelong learning for alumni.

This event is organized by the Office of Alumni Relations and co-sponsored by the Dartmouth Clubs of Piedmont and Central Virginia.

Waterfire is an amazing public art installation in Providence along the river. Dozens of braziers are alight on the water, and they are tended by volunteers traveling up and down the river in boats. The most beautiful music is being played over the water, and it’s a delight to all the senses. We are meeting at a sushi restaurant about half a mile away, to make parking easier for everyone. Meet at 4:00 if you want to eat and drink with us, or 5:30 if you only want to meet up to walk around Waterfire. Looking forward to seeing you there!
